This year, the participants will be Phillies outfielder Kyle Schwarber, Cardinals DH/first baseman Albert Pujols, Nationals outfielder Juan Soto, Guardians infielder José Ramírez, Mets first baseman Pete Alonso, Braves outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr., Rangers shortstop Corey Seager, and Mariners outfielder Julio Rodríguez. At first, it was an event that wasn’t even televised but now, more than seven million people tune into the action on the Monday before the All-Star Game on ESPN. The Home Run Derby has grown a lot from the days when it was instituted as part of the All-Star Game festivities back in 1985.
